ROMA: English for WOW

I don't even know where to start.

Rome is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY I HAVE EVER SEEN.

That about does it. Every single time (seriously) I turned a corner I muttered some form of wow (and even some forms of wow that I should have kept to myself inside the churches). The architecture is the proper definition of awesome. My photos don't even do it justice, but check out some great cellphone shots below! Some of my Rome musings:

1. There are a TON of tourists. Granted, we were there in the days leading up to Easter and with a new Pope, and from what I heard after it was all over the news how packed Rome was. But seriously, it was like taking Victoria in the height of tourist season and multiplying it by 1000. I love Rome, but I'm so glad Milan isn't touristy. I was one of the tourists though, and a shameless one, right down to the double-decker red bus.

2. We spent a rainy day at the Vatican, first in the museums and then in the Basilica. I need to go back one day because honestly, towards the end of the Vatican museums I was in sensory overload and so by the time I reached the Sistine Chapel I was a little... underwhelmed? Which made me sad. However, here's a message to the 37.000 other tourists walking with me at any given moment*: SLOW DOWN AND LOOK UP. I'm sure there were people there on a time constraint, but honestly there are amazing things to see on the way to the Sistine Chapel. Also, don't take 3.000 photos with your crappy mobile phone. Your phone got photos of a piece of a painting here and there, but did you see that the entire ceiling is painted in incredible detail and stretches for metres in front of you?

3. I don't have an architectural mind. The majority of churches, monuments and palazzi that I saw just blow my mind. I can't even imagine who comes up with these ideas to build such things, and where do they start?? It seems like every single things is built with beauty in mind, instead of just functionality. Why make a square building when you could make ginormous arches with little statues on every window ledge? Y'know, while we're building some statues, why not throw some massive ones on top as well?

*You know that feeling you get when walking on or off the BC Ferries, like you're being herded like cattle? Imagine that for two hours...

If we had a staircase like this in Milan I would probably do stair sprints every day. Especially because it leads right down to all of the luxury shops!

You can find the Trevi fountain just by listening for the low hum of the enormous crowd of tourists.

Non so nemmeno dove cominciare.

Roma è LA CITTÀ PIU BELLA CHE HO MAI VISTO.

Basta dire questo. Ho detto 'wow' forse 830 volte ogni giorno. L'architettura è veramente incredibile. Guardando le mie foto non si capisce, ma comunque sopra ho messo delle foto. E poi spiego un po' dei miei pensieri di Roma:

1. C'è un SACCO di touristi. Va beh, eravamo lì nei giorni di pasqua con il nuovo papa, e tutti mi hanno detto che c'erano tante piu persone in quei giorni. Ma veramente, sembrava come essere a Victoria in estate ma 1.000 volte peggiore. Sono innamorata di Roma, ma sono anche contenta che Milano è meno turistica come città. A Roma ero uno dei turisti però, e non me ne fregava. Abbiamo preso anche quel pulman rosso che va in giro!

2. Abbiamo passato un giorno di pioggia al vaticano, primo nei musei e poi nella basilica. Devo tornare un giorno perchè per dire la verità, alla fine dei musei non riuscivo piu capire la bellezza e quando sono arrivata alla capella Sistine sono rimasta un po'... meno impressionata? E poi sono rimasta male sentire così! Vorrei dire qualcosa a tutti i 37.000 altri touristi che erano con me - FERMATEVI E GUARDATE SOPRA. Sicuramente non possono rimanere tutto il giorno, ma veramente il passaggio per arrivare alla capella Sistine è pieno di bellezza se vai un po' lento e guardi un po'. E non fare 3.000 foto con un telefonino. Non si capisce niente da quelle foto e poi tu non vedi niente perchè sei sempre dietro il telefonino!

3. Io non penso come un'architetto. Quasi tutti delle chiese, i monumenti e i palazzi che ho visto erano veramente incomprensibile. Non riesco ad immagine come uno puo decidere un giorno di creare qualcosa così, oppure come si comincia?? Sembra che ogni singola cosa è creata pensando alla bellezza, non soltanto la funzionalità. Invece di costruire un semplice palazzo, costruiamo qualcosa molto piu grande con tanti archi e statue dappertutto. E poi mettiamo qualche statua grandissima in alto. Perchè no?
